Resource packs can be placed in the .minecraft/resourcepacks folder. Each resource pack is either a sub-folder or a .zip file within the resourcepacks folder. To install a resource pack, first locate your Minecraft folder. On Windows, this is typically found in AppData/Roaming/.minecraft/. On Mac, it's in Library/Application Support/minecraft/. Once you've found the correct location, navigate to the resourcepacks folder. If one doesn't already exist, create it. Finally, place your downloaded resource pack file into this directory. After it is in the folder, a resource pack can be added from the options, where you can move it between "Available resource packs" and "Selected resource packs".

Resource packs load their assets based on the order of the packs on the list. The bottom-most pack loads first, then each pack placed above it replaces assets of the same name with its assets. This order is important because if multiple resource packs modify the same textures, the order determines which textures are displayed. You can easily customize this load order in the Resource Packs menu by dragging packs up and down. The "Selected resource packs" also contain the default assets on the bottom, which cannot be removed, ensuring Minecraft always has base textures to work with.

For block or item textures to function correctly, they must have equal width and height (or height that is a multiple of the width if animated); otherwise the texture appears as a magenta and black checkerboard pattern. For most other textures, the file is stretched to fit the required dimensions. Solid blocks turn any transparent area fully opaque, while blocks with "cutout" transparency (like glass) turn all pixels that are less than 10% opaque fully transparent. Most block textures should be 16x16 pixels in PNG format to maintain quality and consistency with Minecraft's visual style.

The resource pack system provides a way for players to further customize their Minecraft experience. Resource packs can be used to override or add new textures, models, sounds, animations, and particle effects without any code modification. This means you can fundamentally change how Minecraft looks and feels without needing to understand programming languages or use external modding tools.

Resource packs use PNG image files and JSON configuration files to define new visual elements. They can modify existing Minecraft textures or introduce entirely new visual enhancements. Some popular resource pack modifications include HD block textures, custom mob skins, realistic materials, stylized cartoon visuals, animated textures, custom UI designs, and special environmental effects.

One of the greatest advantages of resource packs is that they work in pure vanilla Minecraft without any additional mod loaders or external software. This means you can share worlds with other players who also have resource packs installed, and the experience will be consistent across all machines. Additionally, resource packs can be updated independently of Minecraft patches, allowing content creators to fix bugs, optimize performance, and add features at their own pace.

If you're running Minecraft Java Edition version 1.13 or newer, you can use resource packs. The latest versions of Minecraft Java Edition have the most comprehensive resource pack support and access to the newest features. To check your current version, open the Minecraft launcher and look at the version number displayed. If you need to update, the launcher will typically prompt you automatically.
